 IC-2 is used in questions (interrogative sentences) with an interrogative word. The centre of IC-2 is usually the interrogative word.

 The intonational construction IC-1 conveys a complete thought in a statement (declarative sentence). The center of IC-1 is the stressed syllable of the word containing the main item of the information conveyed by the statement.
